With the development of low sulphur diesel fuel the
Company uses it in selected high performance engines. The clean fuel approach is
not only environmentally friendly but also ensures a longer life for engines.
The benefits of low sulphur diesel, as per the
Shell website are:
-
Reducing the ultra fine
particles from diesel engine exhausts will improve local air quality;
-
Reducing sulphur dioxide
emissions, which contribute to acid rain, will reduce the risk of acid rain
occurring;
-
Reducing sulphur in fuel
potentially reduces the risk of corrosive wear in the engine;
-
Reducing the sulphur content
does not inhibit engine performance; and
-
Reducing sulphur facilitates
the introduction of new diesel exhaust treatment catalyst which will further
enhance the reduction of environmentally sensitive diesel emissions.
Euro 5 emission standards
Euro5 has defined the acceptable limits for exhaust emissions of new vehicles
sold. Currently, emissions of Nitrogen oxide, Total hydrocarbon, Non-methane
hydrocarbons, Carbon monoxide are regulated in Europe for most vehicle types.
For each vehicle type, different standards apply.
In Europe, road transport is responsible for about 20% of all Carbon Dioxide
emissions. The target fixed at Kyoto Protocol was an 8% reduction of emissions
in all sectors of the economy compared to 1990 levels by 2008-2012. EU transport
emissions of CO2 currently account for about 3.5% of total global Carbon Dioxide
emissions.
With the Fleet replacement program due to commence in 2011 the priority has been
to focus on prime movers that meet the Euro 5 specification. This will ensure
that Esperance-Geraldton-Kalgoorlie Freight Lines will make its contribution to the challenges of
world climate change.
